Existing Footscray Hospital Site Advocacy Plan

Footscray Hospital

In 2019, the State Government announced a $1.5 billion investment to build a new Footscray Hospital, which will be situated on the corner of Ballarat and Geelong Roads. The hospital is expected to start operating in 2025, with most services relocating to the new facility.

In response, Council has put forward a set of recommendations to the State Government for the future use and redevelopment of the existing hospital site on Gordon Street. These recommendations are based on community feedback gathered from a State Government led engagement in November 2023, and a Council led engagement on a Draft Advocacy Plan in April 2024.

The Advocacy Plan, which was endorsed by Council at the June 2024 Council Meeting, emphasises the need for informal and unstructured green spaces with gathering areas and community gardens, diverse affordable and social housing to accommodate low and very low-income groups, walking and cycling infrastructure, and the adaptive reuse of the heritage-listed psychiatric facility for community use.  Additionally, the Plan calls for the expansion of Brenbeal Children's Centre to meet the growing demand for childcare services.

Council will continue to advocate to the State Government about the significance of the site to the local community to develop it into a vibrant and thriving place for future generations.
