Geographic Naming Policy

Maribyrnong City Council is responsible for naming of roads, features and localities within the municipality. The Policy has been developed to provide a consistent approach to geographic naming.

The Policy ensures that names comply with State Government Guidelines that are established under the Geographic Place Names Act 1998. The Guidelines are available from Geographic Names Victoria’s website.

Maribyrnong City Council encourages names that act as a reminder of local history, culture and citizens, whilst being mindful of needing to achieve a balanced representation of:

  • Indigenous Australia
  • Gender equality
  • Local historical events or figures
  • A multicultural present

The naming process involves extensive community consultation and the final outcome is dependent on both Local and State Government approval. This process can take six to twelve months.
