Amendment C172 proposed heritage protection of eight precincts located in the West Footscray area.

Background

The West Footscray Inter-war and Post-war Heritage Precinct Study 2021 found eight precincts of local heritage significance in West Footscray and surrounding parts of Footscray and Maidstone.

Amendment C172 proposed to implement the findings of the study by applying the Heritage Overlay to the eight precincts on a permanent basis, rezoning land in the precincts to Neighbourhood Residential Zone, and other associated changes to the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme.

The amendment was exhibited from 28 February to 7 April 2022. It attracted 199 submissions, which were referred to an independent Planning Panel appointed by the Minister for Planning to review. Following a six-day public hearing, the Panel found Amendment C172 to be strategically justified and recommended Council adopted it with changes.
