Population Growth Forecasts

Council in conjunction with ID Consulting has updated population forecasts to 2031 for the City of Maribyrnong based on new population and land development projections.

Key Forecasts 2013-2031:

  • The population is predicted to increase to 111,189, an rise of 25,887 (30%) on the Forecast population for 2015 of 85,302
  • The average annual population growth rate is predicted to be about 2.1%.
  • Projected population growth is based on an increase of about 14,916 households between 2015 and 2031.
  • The average number of persons per household is expected to decrease slightly from 2.4 to 2.3 between 2015 and 2031.
  • Resdiential dwelling numbers are expected to increase by 13,161 to 49,000 by 2031.
  • All areas of the municipality are expected to increase in population, with the most significant gains expected in the suburbs of Footscray, Maribyrnong, Yarraville and Braybrook.
  • Significant large development sites have been identified in the suburbs of Footscray, Braybrook and Maribyrnong, with the latter area containing large developments such as Defence Site on Cordite Avenue.
  • Footscray is expected to undergo substantial development in the future, with a significant increase in higher density dwellings, such as the Joseph Road precinct.

Victoria in Future - Victorian State Government’s Population Forecasts

The Victorian State Government’s current population forecasts predict growth between 2012- 2031). Victoria in Future predicts that Maribyrnong's population will increase to 105,865 by 2031. This is an increase of 31,860 (31%) on the ABS estimated residential population for Maribyrnong for 2011 of 74,005.

These population projections differ from the Council/ ID Consulting forecasts. The variance stems from the different methods and assumptions used. Council feels confident the methodology used with ID Consulting provides an accurate picture of anticipated population growth for the municipality and for individual suburbs to 2031.
