Cultural Diversity Week

Cultural Diversity Week brings together Victorians from all walks of life to promote community harmony and celebrate the many cultures that make our state so vibrant.

Calendar of Events for 18-26 March 2017

This year's theme for Cultural Diversity Week is "Our Journey, Our Stories". Each year Maribyrnong City Council encourages, hosts and promotes local celebration of Cultural Diversity Week which extends over one week and coincides with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March.

14 to 28 March, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm Yarn Arts Chest at Braybrook Community Hub Yarn Arts Chest wheelie bin is collecting non-perishable food to be donated to Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Sunday 19 March, 12 - 3pm Harmony Feast at Maidstone Community Centre Harmony Feast is a community celebration embracing the diversity of cultures that reside here. Cooked by our community, it features traditional dishes from around the world including vegetarian and halal. Bring your family and friends for some feasting, fun and entertainment. 18 to 26 March Celebrate Diversity at Maribyrnong Libraries Celebrate Cultural Diversity Week with a series of events at our libraries including film screenings, sharing stories, bilingual story times and BBQ on 18 March at Footscray. Participate at all library branches in Share Your Story or enter our competition for Favourite Book or Author. Film Screenings on Wednesday 22 March: El Secreto de sus ojos 2.30pm, Maribyrnong Library Bollywood Film 6pm, West Footscray Library. Monday 20 March, 11 - 11.45am Bengali - Bilingual Preschool Story Time Join us for songs, stories and rhymes at Central West Shopping Centre. Meet other families, find out about ways to help children develop literacy and language skills, learn about books and libraries, and hear and practice another language. Wednesday 22 March, 11 - 11.45am Mandarin - Bilingual Preschool Story Time Join us for songs, stories and rhymes at Central West Shopping Centre. Meet other families, find out about ways to help children develop literacy and language skills, learn about books and libraries, and hear and practice another language. Wednesday 22 March, 12.30 - 1.30pm Eating Together - Being Together Braybrook Community Hub invites you to participate in a multicultural lunch featuring a variety of cultural foods from across the world. Come and enjoy a meal and bring a friend, family member or meet someone new from your local area. Braybrook Community Hub, 107-139 Churchill Ave, Braybrook Places are limited, call 9188 5800 to book.
Saturday 25 March, 9am - 3.30pm 20th Anniversary of Buddhist Council of Victoria This celebration which marks the 20 year milestone of the BCV, brings the Buddhist community and friends together to celebrate its achievements. This is a family friendly day open to everyone, and will highlight the many different cultures and lineages that fall under the umbrella of Buddhism. A vegetarian lunch is available by donation. Sunday 26 March, 11am - 5pm West Footscray Festival of Colours We're closing Barkly Street! Join us as we celebrate the food, fun and many colours of West Footscray. Activities include the ever popular ‘throwing of the colours’, roller disco, live music and performances, neon photo booth, storytelling, local food, art and market stalls.
